Commissions

Thank you for your interest in my work!

My furniture designs are inspired by iconic furniture from my East Asian and American background, blended with contemporary forms and influences. A custom piece of furniture is a unique, utilitarian artwork created for a specific person, place, or use. It can be a version of a piece in my portfolio or an entirely new functional artwork tailored to the needs, lifestyle, and home of the client. Each piece is made by hand, by me, in my studio, using hand tools and traditional processes that I preserve for the unique, tangible quality they present in the finished furniture. A brand new piece not only involves an understanding of the client and their space to design around that, but an understanding of the woods used and an entirely new technical process. and challenges that emerge when building a piece of furniture for the first time. It is not only to execute, but conceive and prototype. This is a process that suits my style of working and one that I am invested in because of the quality of the resulting work and how it pushes myself as an artist, woodworker, and designer. It is a privilege to build one-off furniture because we together create a look, feel, and form that excites us both.

Thank you very much for your interest—I can’t wait to meet and hear what you have in mind.

Commission Process: An Overview

Usually a client reaches out to me because they like my aesthetic and have a specific type of piece in mind. In initially contacting me, a good idea is to send images or mention around three pieces of my work that you either like or are less inclined towards (the latter can be as instructive as the former). I also ask that the client send images and a floorplan if available of where they intend the furniture to live. We talk about what the client needs in terms of dimensions, wood choice, and style, and discuss the client’s budget for the work. We also discuss timing—clients receive a specific time and cost estimate as part of the commission process. Once we have decided on the details of the pieces, I ask for a 50% deposit. This enables me to purchase the materials needed for the work and reserves your spot in my schedule.

The initial design proposal will usually consist of three different concepts I propose to the client for them to select amongst. Following the selection of a design from these initial proposal sketches, I will make a scale drawing shortly before construction to serve as a final confirmation of dimensions since these cannot be easily changed once wood has been cut.
