Chinoiserie Chair

This “Chinoiserie” chair is based on a proto-“Queen Anne” chair from early 18th-century England. While studying period furniture, I became fascinated by how many forms we now think of as classically Angl0-American were in fact derived from fantastical interpretations of Chinese forms—from the cabriole leg to the scalloped ogee to even the use of the bent back splat which is now present in almost every chair internationally. The chair that this is based on, now at the Victoria & Albert museum, struck me as a clear missing link between early interpretations of Chinese Furniture and the Anglo/Queen Anne Style.
